Sgraffito comes from the Italian "sgraffiare," meaning "to scratch". It is a drawing technique where a sharp tool is used to scratch into a surface to produce drawings with fine lines. It is a method of creating an engraving by scratching through a layer of black Indian ink to reveal a white chalk layer beneath. In some ways it is similar to drawing but in reverse - the white is scratched from the black.
There will a demonstration in the morning of the various techniques followed by a chance to experiment using different tools. We will also cover how to make your own scraperboard and the different ways you can add colour after scratching. In the afternoon you will have time to produce a work based on what you have learnt.
